2018 - Up the Mast

In addition to her usual yearly summer maintenance (you know, varnish, metal polish, power wash, yada yada yada)

rigger Kit Wiegman inspected the rig. He found the mast, all spars, and all standing rigging in good shape. While Kit was up the mast, he

replaced the Aqua Signal Series 40 lens
replaced lights with LED’s
replaced the windex
replaced all halyards
replaced VHF antenna
removed and re-install jib

Now it's time to sail!  

2017 - Hurulu is a "Rockstar" -- Well not exactly, but she "aces" a new marine survey

In 2017 I kept up the usual Hurulu maintenance – regular engine running and fresh air, hull cleanings every quarter, engine maintenance every summer, varnish touch-ups every summer, power washing and general "shine up" as needed.

In June, I was pleased when marine surveyors Steve Jones and Odus Hayes thoroughly inspected Hurulu and found her a very nice boat in very good condition. Not bad for an old girl!

2016 - Hurulu enjoys attention throughout the year

Hurulu didn’t go sailing much in 2016, as I traveled and had a summer surgery that kept me off her -- but she enjoyed regular attention throughout the year thanks to her dock-neighbor, Jeff Wisdom – thank you Jeff !!

Regularly, Jeff runs and checks her engine, checks her lines, systems and bilge, makes sure the dehumidifier is running, airs her out, makes sure there are no leaks, talks to her a bit, gives her a pat on the hull and a knock on her wood.  

Also the usual professional maintenance team kept at their jobs during 2016 – diver Jason Maneri cleans her hull every quarter, mechanic Bill Victor does his annual Yanmar engine service, varnisher Victor Rodriguez keeps up her brightwork. 

2015 Summer - Haulout at Bay Marine

After her haulout, Hurulu's hull slices through water like a knife through butter


Inspect through hulls, two coasts paint, dry and grind small blisters in hull, then coat and epoxy. inspect stuffing box, repack prop packing gland, inspect cutlass bearing and rudder post packing gland, inspect steering system, inspect and test all 8 keel bolts, clean propeller, paint propeller with propspeed, rub out and wax topsides.

In addition, Hurulu was treated to 3-4 coats of exterior varnish, a power wash, and a new fresh water pressure pump was installed.

2014 - Pumps and Pumps and Packing Glands and Winches

The weather this fall was great for lots of sunny light-air bay sailing.

In addition to her usual yearly engine maintenance, Yanmar engine mechanic Bill Ingle replaced the raw water and fresh water pumps, draining both systems and replacing all hoses. Adjusting the packing gland made Hurulu a dry boat. Other maintenance included greasing all winches, inspecting the keel bolts, and more.

2013 Summer - Yanmar Engine Overhaul; Lots of Bay Sailing

We decided to take a break from boat maintenance and get Hurulu out of her berth. So we hired master Yanmar engine mechanic Bill Ingle to go thoroughly through engine and do whatever was necessary to make her totally reliable. While we were at it, we replaced her batteries with new ACM maintenance-free ones. Now with Hurulu's engine trouble-free, we've had a lot of fun bay sailing her this summer.
